What does a birth doula do?

By DouLaurin. Published .

TL;DR

  • A birth doula gives continuous emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and shortly after birth.
  • Doulas do not perform clinical tasks, give medical advice, or deliver babies.
  • Support usually includes prenatal meetings, on-call time near your due date, continuous labor support, and a postpartum check-in.

What is a birth doula?

DONA International defines a doula as a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a client before, during, and shortly after childbirth. A birth doula focuses on pregnancy, labor, and the first hours after birth.

The word to notice is continuous. Nurses change shifts and providers come and go, but a doula stays with you through active labor.

What does a doula do before labor?

Before labor, a doula meets with you to learn your hopes and questions, share evidence-informed information, and help you prepare comfort techniques and a birth-preferences summary to review with your provider.

  • Talk through your hopes, worries, and questions
  • Practice comfort techniques with you and your partner
  • Help you put birth preferences into clear words
  • Plan how and when to reach your doula once labor begins

What does a doula do during labor?

During labor, a doula offers comfort measures such as breathing guidance, position ideas, movement, and counter-pressure, along with steady encouragement and plain-language information so you can take part in decisions.

A doula also supports your partner, suggesting ways to help and giving them breaks. Your clinical care stays entirely with your nurses, midwife, or physician.

What does a birth doula not do?

A birth doula does not perform clinical or medical tasks, diagnose, give medical advice, or make decisions for you. That includes no vaginal exams, blood pressure checks, fetal monitoring, or medications.

Frequently asked questions

Does a birth doula stay for the whole labor?

A birth doula typically joins you in active labor and stays continuously through birth and the first hours after. The exact plan for when your doula joins you is agreed in advance.

Can a doula support a cesarean birth?

Yes. Emotional support, information, and comfort matter in a cesarean birth too. Whether a doula can be in the operating room depends on the hospital policy.

Will a doula replace my partner?

No. A doula supports and includes your partner so they can be present in the way that feels right to them.

DouLaurin provides non-medical doula support. This guide is general information, not medical advice. For decisions about your health or your baby's health, talk with your physician, midwife, or other licensed provider.
